Information about the Nok

The Nok civilization thrived between 500 BC and 200 AD on the Jos Plateau in northeastern Nigeria. They are the first known West African societies and set the trend for later empires, most notably the Kingdom of Benin.

The Nok was the first known iron-smelting civilization in West Africa, and the first known art-producing civilization in sub-saharan Africa. radiocarbon analysis dates Nok artifacts between 500 BC and 200 AD.

Little is known about the Nok people because they did not have a written language. They are most famous for their terra cotta masks and sculptures, imitated by the Benin culture during the 15th and 16th centuries

The word Nok itself is a modern invention, the name of the Nigerian town in which, in 1928, the civilization's remains were first discovered.
